All about the SVALBARD to REYKJAVIK – Silversea Expedition Cruise.

From the capital of frozen fun to the most inspirational archipelago on earth embark on a voyage that will cover much more than mere miles. Enjoy Icelandic tall tales from its fabled past as you espouse the pretty coasts and give your taste buds a treat with some surprisingly good gastronomy. A day at sea prepares you to enter to realm of the polar bear and placid waters of Svalbard.

Join us for a journey from Iceland to Svalbard, Norway, visiting isolated islands and remote regions. Cruise past spectacular bird cliffs in Iceland, marveling at the multitude of puffins, guillemots and gulls that congregate to nest. While in Iceland, explore the area around Lake Myvatn to see how geology plays an important factor in Iceland’s daily life, or go whale-watching along Iceland’s northern coast. In Svalbard, encounter fascinating landscapes, mountains, fjords and glaciers while looking for walrus and polar bears. Throughout the voyage, learn about the geology, wildlife, botany and history of this spectacular area from lecture presentations offered by your knowledgeable on-board Expedition Team.

Voyage Highlights:

Latrabjarg Cliffs, Iceland –
Silver Cloud will sail next to one of Europe’s largest bird cliffs and a truly stunning sight to experience. The 14-kilometer cliff is covered with tens of thousands of Atlantic Puffins, Northern Gannets, Razorbills and guillemots that perch there safely from predators.

Dynjandi, Iceland –
Iceland is well-known for its dazzling waterfalls, and the Dynjandi is recognized as one of the country’s most impressive and majestic. Hike past 6 other spectacular waterfalls to reach Dynjandi, the Westfjords’ biggest at 100 feet wide, with a 330-foot tumble into the fjord below. Dynjandi means “the thundering one,” named for its enormous sound.

Vigur Island, Iceland –
Visit the tiny and private island to see how Icelanders collect eider down. The island is also home to Atlantic Puffins and Arctic Terns, which can be seen while walking across the island. After the walk enjoy home-baked cakes and cookies made by the Vigur Island owners.

Akureyri, Iceland –
Akureyri is the gateway to Lake Myvatn (“Midges Lake”). The lake is part of a protected nature reserve and many birds (including thirteen species of ducks) frequent the surrounding wetlands. Nature’s power is plainly displayed in Namafjall’s geothermal springs, as well as on a walk along the lake’s shore onto some pseudo-craters, and through the massive, often unusual lava formations of Dimmuborgir.

Jan Mayen, Norway –
With permission from the Norwegian authorities and the right weather conditions, we will make a landing at this rarely visited outpost to visit the research and weather station. Walks to the station and beyond will give us a view of the meteorological station and of the long black sandy eastern shore of the island. The waters around Jan Mayen are known as feeding ground for whales of several species.

Svalbard Northern Region, Norway –
In Svalbard we will enter fjords, searching the ice and the shores for seabirds, walruses, seals, and polar bears. Shore walks and Zodiac landings will bring us up close to these mystical wintry settings. The Expedition Leader and Captain will determine the best course, depending on changing weather, ice conditions and the wildlife we encounter.

Kayaking –
Weather permitting, Silversea Expeditions offers the opportunity to kayak in a small group under the guidance of certified kayak instructors. These special excursions are a chance to appreciate the wilds of the Arctic in silence.

Cultural Highlights:

  • Meet the owners of Vigur Island to learn about Eider Duck farming. Enjoy their company over a cup of tea or coffee and home-baked cookies and cakes.

Wildlife Watch List:

  • Polar bear and Svalbard reindeer
  • Bearded seals, grey seals, harbor seal, and walrus
  • Humpback whales, blue whales, fin whales, beluga whales, and harbor porpoises
  • Birds of note: Red-breasted Merganser, Barnacle Goose, Common Eider, Common Raven, Black-legged Kittiwake, Herring Gull, Lesser Black-backed Gull, Common Gull, Ivory Gull, Great Skua, Arctic Skua, Redwing, Razorbill, Common Guillemot, Black Guillemot, Brünnich’s Guillemot, Atlantic Puffin, Eurasian Oystercatcher, Redshank, Meadow Pipit, Arctic Tern, Northern Gannet, Northern Fulmar

Expedition highlights and wildlife listed here are possible experiences only and cannot be guaranteed. Your Expedition Leader and Captain will work together to ensure opportunities for adventure and exploration are the best possible, taking into account the prevailing weather, wildlife activity and ice conditions. Expedition Team members scheduled for this voyage are subject to change or cancellation.

Pre- and Post-cruise tours

Travel Insurance

  1. Day 1 LONGYEARBYEN - EMBARKATION - Depart 4:00 PM

Arrive a day or two early to avoid travel problems and see something of Norway.

A pre-cruise hotel night is included, either in Longyearbyen or on the mainland, depending on flight schedule, or in Reykjavik on reverse itinerary.

Seat of the Norwegian administration, it also has the best services and infrastructure in the archipelago. Located deep in the Adventfjord, a sidearm of the Isfjorden (Icefjord), Longyearbyen’s airport can be used all-year round, but its harbor is blocked by ice in winter. Most shops, hotels, restaurants and a hospital are within easy walking distance of the port. One of the most prominent buildings in town is the UNIS center, where several Norwegian universities have joined forces to operate and offer the northernmost higher education to both Norwegian and international students. Adjacent to UNIS, and well worth a visit, is the Svalbard Museum, covering the natural history and exploitation of Svalbard. Remnants of the former mining activity can be seen all around Longyearbyen and even in town.

  2. Days 2-4 SVALBARD NORTHERN REGION, NORWAY

Svalbard’s northern region is less influenced by the Norwegian Current coming through the Greenland Sea than the southern region and shows more ice. The northern part of the island of Spitsbergen shows quite a number of impressive fjords, bays and glaciers. The Nordaust Svalbard Nature Reserve includes Spitsbergen’s east coast, the Hinlopen Strait, Nordaustlandet and some islands further east like Kvitoya and Storoya. Several walrus haul-outs, spectacular glaciers, bird cliffs and bird islands, as well as surprising flora in Arctic deserts and the possibility to see polar bears and to visit historically important sites make this an area prone for exploration. Ice conditions will dictate which sites can be seen.

There are several deep fjords and prominent glaciers in the northern reaches of Svalbard, as well as the northern hemisphere’s widest glacier front. Ice conditions will dictate how much can be accessed in terms of cruising bird islets like the Andøyane Islets or approaching glaciers like Monaco Glacier and Seliger Glacier. The Northern Region is also known to have several walrus haul-outs and areas defined as “Arctic Desert”. Walks and hikes ashore to have a closer look at flora and wildlife are a possibility in the spectacular Northern Region of Svalbard.

  3. Days 5-7 SVALBARD SOUTHERN REGION, NORWAY

Svalbard’s Southern Region and specifically Spitsbergen’s west coast is less ice-clogged than the rest of Svalbard due to the moderating influenced of the Gulf Stream. Several fjords cut into the western coast of Spitsbergen and have been used by trappers and hunters, as well as the different mining companies that tried to exploit the riches of the archipelago’s largest island of Spitsbergen. Remains of huts and mines, as well as active commercial and scientific settlements can be found and visited. Depending on the time of the season, glaciers can be visited on foot or by sea. Northern places like Magdalenefjorden and Hornsund will reveal fascinating views of geological formations, craggy mountains, spectacular glaciers and a variety of seabirds and seals.

  4. Days 8-9 DAYS AT SEA

Days at sea are the perfect opportunity to relax, unwind and catch up with what you’ve been meaning to do. So whether that is going to the gym, visiting the spa, whale watching, catching up on your reading or simply topping up your tan, these blue sea days are the perfect balance to busy days spent exploring shore side.

  5. Days 10-12 SCORESBY SUND, GREENLAND

Scoresby Sund is the largest and longest fjord sys-tem in the world and exhibits all the natural wonders Greenland has to offer. This labyrinth of islands, fjords and ice boggles the mind at every turn. Named in honor of William Scoresby, the English explorer who mapped the area in 1822, Scoresby Sund today hosts only the small town of Ittoqqortoormiit, although it has been inhabited by many Paleo-Eskimo cultures in the past. The area is incredibly rich in Arctic wildlife, hosting musk oxen, arctic foxes and a wealth of marine life including whales, belugas, narwhals, walrus and seals, as well as several species of sea birds, including King Eiders, Atlantic Puffins and several species of geese which migrate to the area during the fleeting Arctic Summer. It is also one of the best places in the world to see polar bears in their natural habitat, an experience that can never be forgotten. But the scenery is the true highlight of Scoresby Sund.

  6. Day 13 ITTOQQORTOORMIIT, GREENLAND

Less than 10 kilometers from the entrance to the Scoresbysund system, Ittoqqortoormiit (“Big House Dwellers”) lies on the southern tip of Liverpool Land, a low and rounded area compared to the steeper mountains further south or into the fjord system. Some 460 inhabitants call Ittoqqortoormiit, one of Greenland’s most isolated settlements, their home. Today hunting narwhals, seals, polar bears and muskoxen is still an important part of the life, but tour-ism is gaining importance.

  7. Day 14 DAY AT SEA

  8. Day 15 REYKJAVIK, ICELAND – DISEMBARK

Sprawling Reykjavík, the nation’s nerve center and government seat, is home to half the island’s population. On a bay overlooked by proud Mt. Esja (pronounced eh-shyuh), with its ever-changing hues, Reykjavík presents a colorful sight, its concrete houses painted in light colors and topped by vibrant red, blue, and green roofs. In contrast to the almost treeless countryside, Reykjavík has many tall, native birches, rowans, and willows, as well as imported aspen, pines, and spruces. Reykjavík’s name comes from the Icelandic words for smoke, reykur, and bay, vík. In AD 874, Norseman Ingólfur Arnarson saw Iceland rising out of the misty sea and came ashore at a bay eerily shrouded with plumes of steam from nearby hot springs. Today most of the houses in Reykjavík are heated by near-boiling water from the hot springs. Natural heating avoids air pollution; there’s no smoke around.
